Another Winter in Cear

November 21, 2016

Hi guys!

Wow. I can't believe this, but today is my 22 month mark! Holy cow! How did that happen? It's exciting but also really scary. I have so many mixed feelings about the next two months. But in the meantime, I'm busy working. There's not time to worry too much. There's people to find, teach, and baptize!

Well, we have had bit of a disappointing week. Now before I get into that, we did have a lot of good happen. For one, Jesse and Elijah Wood are getting baptized next week. We also picked up a new investigator. And I'm not sick anymore! But we also just got cancelled on or dodged so much. I don't know why, but ever since I came to Cedar West, I don't think I've had 50% of my appointments actually happen. Now, I've had rough weeks before, but this has been two months of so many cancellations. I've been working hard. I'm doing my best, but I'm just not seeing the results I want. It's frustrating. We set realistic goals only to never reach them. Again, this is nothing new to me, but it'd be nice to reach our goals at least once in a transfer and a half. Even our really good weeks have still fallen short of what we had planned. Anyway, it's rough, and 90% of it is from people not keeping appointments.

We also had a hard time finding this past week. We did pick up one new investigator, but so many other potentials rejected us. We got a list of people to contact from the stake clerk, and we've burned though probably 2/3 of it and we're just getting shut down.

But we've just gotta keep on working and trusting that things will get better, and trying to keep our enthusiasm up. I think it will get better. Maybe this week...

This week may actually be fairly good. We've taken into account Thanksgiving and that a lot of people will be out of town, and we've got several appointments set up that the holiday shouldn't affect at all. I just hope they all keep their appointments.

And speaking of Thanksgiving, that will be interesting. We've got two and a half dinners planned. One of those we were kind of guilted into because it's some members we had to cancel on do to me being sick. So they invited us to Thanksgiving. I couldn't really say no to that since I've already cancelled on them once. And then there's a really cool ward mission leader who will also be feeding us. And we're going over for pie at the stake clerk's house. It's going to be...exhausting. We're definitely going to have to pace ourselves.

In other news, we have snow! It snowed a few days ago, and this morning it's been snowing. Well, it's been snowing, sleeting, and raining, so we have this wonderful slushy mix of wintry sludge covering everything. And it's cold. But it's exciting to see some precipitation and change in seasons.

Well, that's about all for this Monday. But before I end, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I just want to mention some things I'm thankful for. I'm thankful for my family. I'm thankful for my friends, all those from before my mission, and the ones I've made on my mission. I'm so grateful to be serving a mission and for all those who I've come to know. With a lot of the people I've taught, there are many times I feel like I was the one being taught and benefited. Most of all, I'm thankful to God for sending Jesus Christ, and I'm so grateful to Christ for what He did for us and for me.

No matter how bad the world gets, there really is a lot to be thankful for. What are you thankful for?

Have a great week, and happy Thanksgiving!

-Elder Oswald
