Hi everyone!
We had an alright week. It wasn't the greatest, but it wasn't bad.
P-Day was last week was really fun. (Pictures are included in last week's message.) Elder Howard and his greenie (Elder Parsons) came up from St. George and we visited Kolob Canyon. For those who don't know, Kolob Canyon is a part of Zion National Park, but it can only be accessed from the Cedar area. So functionally it's kind of a separate national park. But anyway, it is beautiful! We drove all the way up to the lookout point, and then went on a short hike. Sometime, I'd like to go on one of the longer hikes, but we didn't have as much time that day. But yeah, it was spectacular!
The rest of the week went alright too. Layla and Mya are still progressing toward baptism and we taught them a couple times this week. We also had several recent convert lessons, and we would have
had more except a couple cancelled and then Friday and Saturday evening nobody was home, because of the stinking football games at SUU (I had forgotten about weekends in Cedar). We also still haven't found any new investigators. I almost feel like I brought my bad luck with me from St. George. We tried contacting several people who were either referrals or former investigators who still seemed kinda promising. No luck. Most were not home, and one told us he'd be out of town for the next few weeks.
And we haven't been getting many referrals from members lately. And when we do, they're barely even referrals. It's usually something like "oh there's some people down the street, I don't know very well, but I don't think they're members, you could try them". That's not a referral. Firstly, a referral should be an actual name and an address, and preferably some background info. Giving a first name and vague directions to their house that we'll never remember doesn't count. Also, a referral should be a person that the member actually knows and has a reason for referring them. There should be thought put into it, and the member should be prepared to assist the missionaries in teaching, and perhaps even contacting said referral. That's what I call a real referral. Unthought out name dropping is barely a step above tracting. We'll try our best to work with it, but it's just not very productive at all in my experience.
But besides the area being kinda slow, things are going pretty well, and we've had a pretty fun week. We did a lot of service. And we did exchanges with the Spanish Elders which was pretty fun, though it was another reminder that I'm useless in communicating with Spanish speakers. We also got into a big prank war. It started on exchanges when some Elders stole and hid a couple items of mine, and left riddles as to where they were hidden. I found one item fairly easily, though the other took a couple days to finally track down. After a few days of alliances, shenanigans, cryptic clues, and holding various items for ransom, the culprits ended up being Cedar English (Elders Robinson and Baker), which is kinda what I figured, though they left a few red herrings and attempted to frame Cedar Spanish and the Zone Leaders. But the joke's on them, because I got my stuff back, and right under their noses, I kidnapped their man sized teddy bear again, and hid him where they'll never find him. The score has been evened. :)
Well, that's all for now. Have a great week!
-Elder Oswald
